2. United Negro College Fund (UNCF)

This organization provides scholarships and financial support to African American students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).


UNCF is considered the nation’s largest private scholarship provider to minority group members. The organization has helped more than 500,000 underrepresented African American students through college. The foundation invest more than $100 million in scholarships to students attending more than 1,100 schools across the country.

The UNCF scholarship program is open to African American high school and college students strictly in need of financial assistance or/and merit-based. Any discipline/field of study is acceptable.

3. National Black Nurses Association

This organization offers scholarships to African American students pursuing a degree in nursing.


The NBNA was founded in 1971 by Dr. Lauranne Sams, who was recognized as the former Dean and Professor of Nursing, School of Nursing, Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama.

Unlike the previously listed scholarship, the NBNA is strictly for nursing students. Not just that, you must be a registered member of NBNA and a member of a local chapter (if it exists in your area). Also, you must have one school year remaining before you apply.

This scholarship however, has specific requirements that must be met aside to being a nursing student. Applicant must provide two recommendation letters, official transcripts, 500 word personal essay, resume or CV (maximum of 5 pages), passport photograph, and proof of involvement in community services.

NBNA has more than 20 active scholarship programs. This give every applicant an opportunity to select a program which best fits their qualifications. The scholarship amount starts from $1,000 up to $15,000.

4. Ron Brown Scholar Program

This program provides scholarship support to African American high school seniors who demonstrate academic achievement and a commitment to service.

Each year, RBSP awards a minimum of 10 students a fully funded scholarship. The selected scholars are entitled to receive $10,000 annually for four years in college. Applicant’s chosen school of study must be in the United States. Scholars are free to select any academic discipline provided that it is a four-year course.

To apply for the Ron Brown Scholars Program, you must be a citizen of the United States, a Black/African American, must possess good academic records, be in need of financial assistance, actively participating in community service, and must be a high school senior as at the time of application.

5. Thurgood Marshall College Fund

This organization provides scholarships and support to African American students attending member schools, which include Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and predominantly black institutions.


Scholarships offered by TMCF are merit based plus need based. Selected students are awarded annually provided that they maintain good academic performances and fulfill all necessary requirements.

To apply, you must be enrolled in any of TMCF’s member school, and must meet all eligibility requirements. Funds are usually disturbed each semester and are based on a verification process designed to ensure that academic expectations are being met and that there is an unmet financial need.

Can a White Student Get a Minority Scholarship?
