BK Foundation has awarded scholarships worth $55 million to over 45,000 deserving students across North America. The program is on a mission to consistently award scholarships of at least $7 million each year. This means, over 4,000 students get awarded annually!

About Burger King Foundation
The Burger King (or BK) is an American-based multinational chain of hamburger fast food restaurants founded in 1954 by David Edgerton and James McLamore. It’s scholarship program was established in memory of James “Jim” W. McLamore, the Co-Founder of Burger King.
BK restaurant is not just known for satisfying its customers, but also for their charitable works. Through the Burger King Foundation, two national charitable programs were formed.
One of the charity program is known as Have It Your Way Foundation. This program is a US-based non-profit corporation on a mission to eradicate hunger, control diseases and improve community education through scholarship programs at Universities in the United States.
The other charity program is known as the McLamore Foundation. It is also a non-profit corporation that provides financial aid to students in the United States.
While over 45,000 students have benefitted and currently benefiting from the BK scholarship programs, thousands of other students will benefit. The foundation has projected to continuously support students who demonstrate academic excellence and participation in community services.
Who can apply for this Scholarship
Graduating high school seniors are the main priorities for the BK scholarship. You must be graduating from high school and interested in pursuing a college degree for the 2023-24 academic year at an accredited university or vocational institution.
The interested student must also have a good academic record, must have participated in community services, active in extracurricular activities and possess some work experience. Finally, you must be from the United States, Canada, Guam or Puerto Rico.
Burger King Scholarship Requirements
Consider yourself fully eligible if you pass the following requirements:
- High school senior in US, Puerto Rico, and Guam, 12th grade graduate (Canada), or homeschool graduate in US, Puerto Rico, Guam, or Canada.
- Currently living in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico or Canada.
- Have a minimum Grade Point Average, GPA, of 2.0 on a scale of 4.0.
- Planning to enroll full-time for the entire 2023-24 academic year at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational school or equivalent without interruptions.
- Actively participating in community services.
Additional Eligibility For Employees
- Be an Employee of Burger King
- Have a spouse or domestic partner of an employee
- A dependent child (biological or adopted) of a Burger King Employee.
Note: Employees must have a payroll of at least 3 months as of the application deadline and employed at the time the awards are verified.
Required Documents for Application
- Current high school or college transcripts. It must display your name, school name, grading system, credit hours for each course and term the course was taken.
- Payment slip for at least three (3) months (for employees only)
- Other documents (if any).
How to apply
Applications are submitted electronically. Once the foundation receives 50,000 applications, the portal closes. Eligible students are to follow the steps below to apply. You can apply in English, Spanish or French.
- Create an account on Burger King. Use a unique username and password with a valid email address
- Validate your account by verifying your email address
- Proceed to create your student’s profile
- Commence your scholarship application
- Provide information of your work experiences and involvement in community/school services
- Upload your current academic transcript (official or unofficial)
- Provide employee information if your application is affiliated with a Burger King employee.
- Review your application before submitting. You will not be able to edit your application once submitted.

Selection Process
All information submitted is reviewed only by Scholarship America. The selection process is based on applicant’s grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities and community service.
The general selection required for consideration are as follows: academic performance 40%, participation in community/school activities and work experience 40% and need for financial assistance 20%.
Applicants are fully responsible for the collection and upload of their documents. Any application without complete documents will not be processed for review.
Scholarship Benefits
Scholar’s award will be disturbed to different categories of students/application.
- $50,000 granted to 3 most deserving students under the James W. McLamore WHOPPER scholarships.
- $5,000 (regional award for 12 regions) to the most qualified employees
- $10,000 (regional award for 6 regions) to the top qualified employees
- Several annually based special-named awards for various franchisees through donations (start from $1,000 to each recipient).
Note: All award checks will be issued in USD for recipients in the U.S. and CAD for recipients in Canada.
Burger King Scholarship Winners Announcement
Only selected applicants will be notified via email in May. Once notified, you will be required to submit additional information to Scholarship America. Failure to submit information will get his/her scholarship revoked.
Recipients will receive a mailed Check from Scholarship America to their home address if selected as a winner. Be advised that the scholarship payment is done once (non-renewable) in early August.
Burger King scholars are required to notify their college or university about the award and deliver the scholarship check to the school in a timely manner.
They are also expected to participate in surveys while they receive the awards and for up to two years beyond their enrollment.
