The Hagan Scholarship is considered as a nationwide merit scholarship for students in need of financial assistance. Its goal is to help college students graduate debt free.

The Hagan Scholarship has been consistent in awarding college students scholarships since it was established. So far, more than 2,900 students have been awarded scholarships from the Hagan Scholarship Foundation.

The scholarship provides up to $48,000 and other benefits over four years to attend college. However, the Hagan Scholarship has restrictions to certain states. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must graduate from an eligible and recognized public high school.

Hagan Scholarship Foundation recognizes more than 7,000 public high schools. A public high school is considered eligible if it is located in a city or town having fewer than 25,000 residents. Such cities or town’s outer boundary must not abut another city or town.

However, adjoining cities and towns with a combined population having fewer than 25,000 residents are eligible on the condition that their combined outer boundary does not abut another city or town.

About The Hagan Foundation

The Hagan Center for Humanities Foundation was established in the year 1997 by Dr. Cornelius Hagan. He established the foundation to support charitable initiatives in the Spokane community. Dr. Hagan’s Foundation was primarily focused on education.

Dr. Hagan was a retired Spokane ear, throat and nose specialist. He was a lover of books and learning. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. After the World War II, he was brought to Spokane, where he completed his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Corps at Fort George Wright.

After the Hagan Foundation was established, Dr. Hagan and his wife were secretly sponsoring students in community colleges in Spokane. They were supporting the literacy and book-purchase program to college students who needed help in purchasing textbooks.

The Hagan foundation is funded by a growing Community Colleges of Spokane Foundation Endowment. Today, more than 2,900 college students have benefitted from the foundation.

Who can apply for Hagan Scholarship

The Hagan Scholarship is open to rural students who are recent graduates of an eligible and recognized Public High school. A public high school is considered eligible if it is located in a city or town having fewer than 25,000 residents. Such cities or town’s outer boundary must not abut another city or town.

Eligible Public High Schools

So far, the Hagan Scholarship Foundation has recognized over 7,000 public high schools. To know if your high school is considered eligible, visit the Hagan List of Public High schools.

Students whose high school is not on the list but qualifies the eligibility criteria can email HSF with the following information: your name, name of high school, city, and state. If confirmed, the foundation would add the school to their list.

Eligible Colleges and Universities

For enrolled or incoming college students, your college must be recognized by the Hagan Scholarship Foundation. The HSF considers a college or university eligible if the institution offers a four-year degree program. The institution also must be accredited by one of the six regional accreditors in the United States and having more than five hundred enrolled students.

Hagan’s scholars currently attend or will attend the 429 colleges and universities listed. However, If you attend an eligible institution not listed in the HSF website, send an email with the following information: your name, name of institution, city, and state. Hagan Scholarship Requirements 2022-2023

  1. Applicants must be a resident of the United States.
  2. Must have attended an eligible Public high school.
  3. Applicants must be ranked in the top 20% of the high school graduating class.
  4. Must have at least 3.50 Cumulative Grade Point Average.
  5. Applicants must be enrolled at an eligible Four-Year College or University the first semester following high school graduation.
  6. Must maintain a maximum of a 4-year degree program.
  7. Must work not more than 240 hours in a year prior to fall semester college enrollment. Employers are expected to provide a comfortable work schedule under supervision and compensate workers (students) appropriately.
  8. Applicants are required to provide the FAFSA SAR showing the EFC. The EFC is only needed to determine the disbursement amount. It does not have to be paid by the parents.
  9. Must apply for Federal and State grants if eligible.
  10. Must not be an ex-convict

The Hagan Scholarship Foundation requires it’s recipient to be high-achieving, willing to work, has clear goals (study plan), and has genuine need for financial assistance in order to attend college. It is known that the average Hagan scholar is ranked 9th in a class of 107 students.

Hagan Scholarship Application

Applications for Hagan Scholarship 2022-2023 opens September 1, 2022. Interested and eligible candidates are required to create a UN and PW to access the Application. Applicants are to provide their personal email address. The provided email must be valid for at least a year.
Note: The Application Link and Scholar Portal Link are different. Only Hagan Scholars can access the Scholar Portal.

Tips on how to submit a Successful Application

  1. Follow the instructions carefully when filling the online application form and when preparing your documents.
  2. To distinguish yourself from other high achieving applicants, make sure you write a well constructed personal essay and Four-Year-Plan. These two documents are very important as it increases the chances of being selected. Learn the basis of how to write a study plan.
  3. Ensure you upload a clear photo and your PDF documents are of high quality. Avoid using photos of documents. Set the scanner setting to Black/White, not color or gray scale, to minimize the size of the PDF.
  4. Make sure you double-check your work before uploading. Confirm the correct Adobe PDF has been uploaded to the provided Link by opening the PDF after it has been uploaded.
  5. Provide a personal email address that will be valid for one year. This is because, the email cannot be changed until after the fall semester of college following high school graduation.
  6. Do not use your parent’s email address or school’s email address. Also, set your Spam settings to receive HSF emails. Do Not forward HSF emails, and do not unsubscribe.
  7. Lastly, Complete the FAFSA at least one month before the Deadline. It may take a week or more to obtain the SAR and your EFC. Ensure your parents’ information are included in the FAFSA application.

How to Sustain your Scholarship

To continue receiving the Hagan Scholarship during your four-year program, recipients must adhere to the guidelines of the Foundation. Ensure you maintain at least 3.50 CGPA. Do not work more than 240 hours in 12 months prior to fall semester college enrollment. Avoid engaging in any criminal activities. Stay focused with school’s activities and practicals etc.

Hagan Scholarship Disbursement

The HSF will provide its recipients with the opportunity to obtain a four-year college education and graduate debt-free. The foundation covers free Workshops, free Schwab Brokerage Accounts and Free Study Abroad. It also provides scholars with a practical understanding of important life skills not typically covered in the school curriculum.

However, the Hagan Scholarship Foundation primarily focuses on students in need of financial assistance. The scholarship amounts up to $6,000 each semester.

  • The disbursement amount will be determined each semester by HSF by taking the Total Cost of Attendance including tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, personal and transportation costs. Then, deducting the total dollar amount of ALL scholarships, awards, grants, waivers and one-half of the recipient’s EFC.
  • The disbursement amount will be adjusted each semester to offset the expiration or loss of other scholarships, awards, grants, waivers and changes in the recipient’s EFC.
  • The scholarship will run for eight (8) semesters if the recipient continues to fulfil the scholarship eligibility criteria.
  • First year recipients will be given $1,000 to sort their personal items for college such as Smartphone, Laptop, clothes, bed, etc. The money is prior to college enrollment and not covered by the scholarship.
  • Second year recipients will be given $1,000 to establish a personal brokerage account, and will be provided with a $20,000 HSF brokerage account to manage until graduation. This scheme will help scholars learn how to invest to achieve financial security.
  • Third year recipients with a minimum of 3.50 Cumulative Grade Point Average are eligible for an all-expense paid study and travel abroad experience worth up to $8,000 or the funds can be used to study abroad for one semester.
  • Recipients graduating from college in less than 8 semesters can use the remaining of their Hagan scholarship for graduate school. Full time graduate students receive $6,000 each semester (without restrictions to credit hours).
  • Recipients must not work more than 240 hours in a year, prior to fall semester college enrollment.
  • There is no application or processing fee for the Hagan Scholarship.

Note: Applicants will be selected on an objective and non-discriminatory basis, regardless of applicant’s color, gender, origin, disability etc. The selection process is going to be free and fair.

Deadline for Hagan Scholarship 2022-2023

Hagan Scholarship opens September 1, 2022, and ends December 1, 2022.
Selected applicants will be notified of their awards March 2023.
However, eligible Finalists not awarded a scholarship receive $1,000.
